Afternoon ya’ll! This hot, hot, hot July weather is certainly making me miss the cool, mountain weather of Tennessee in early June. My heart longs for hazy azure hills smeared across a cotton-piled sky while fresh breezes threaded like gaily skipping children down mountain trails golden with the slanting afternoon sun. Memories and laughter, light and gay like the tumbling of a forest stream, wander back across these summer days. Somewhere, nowhere, an hour west of Knoxville and an hour east of Nashville, we detoured to Catoosa Wildlife Reserve where a winding, gravel road slanted dangerous downhill. Startlingly low boughs, bright and lush with the tender youth of early June, brushed the top of the motorhome as the brakes squealed with exuberance. Abruptly, to my mother's immense relief, the road widened into a gravel clearing along the banks of a quiet river spanned by a picturesque old bridge. Breathlessly, we piled out, wrinkling our noses at the smell of overheated brakes, but soon forgetting the unpleasantries over our excitement of exploring the river. A gurgling, unassuming rapids widened into a deep pool, murky, and strangely mysterious, but perfectly reflecting an overshadowing rock wall and verdant trees which grew along the banks. Quiet water flowed from the pool, gurgling over stones and flowing past boulders before passing under the picturesque bridge. Wildflowers bloomed on the bank, fish flashed in the shallows, and fog drifted out from behind distant hills like a fair maiden from behind a curtained window. The bridge, with irresistible rustic charm, begged to be photographed against the backdrop of mists and rugged forests. Smiles danced over young faces, laughter drifted over the waters, joy bubbled as rich and full as the waters which flowed under the bridge. Tranquility basked in this lonesome treasure of resting place, peace flourished in the quiet waters, and unpretentious country charm flitted like blithe little shadows beside the bridge.
